Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta Celebrates Women of Inspiration 2026 and Raises Over $54K in Support of Girls
Fort McMurray, Alberta – In celebration of International Women’s Day, Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta proudly hosted the Innovators and Pioneers: Women of Inspiration Celebration 2026, alongside its annual Girls Empowerment Mini-Gala, bringing together community members, partners, and young leaders for a powerful weekend of inspiration, connection, and impact.
The Women of Inspiration Celebration, held on March 7th at SMS Equipment Place, brought together community members, partners, and supporters to recognize five outstanding women whose leadership, innovation, and dedication continue to shape the Wood Buffalo region:
- Hanna Fridhed, recognized for her leadership and impact in the community and development of the arts in Wood Buffalo
- Tayla Malott, celebrated for her contributions to maternal and fetal wellness in the region
- Kassondra Meyer, honoured for redefining wellness and community care through innovative approaches to health
- Angela McKenzie, recognized for advancing community safety, Indigenous leadership, and inclusive systems
- Katie Runnalls, celebrated for her work in advancing equity and empowering girls through STEM education
Each recipient embodies what it means to be strong, smart, and bold, serving as role models for the next generation of girls and leaders in our community.
The evening featured a dynamic program, including an Indigenous Fashion Show organized in partnership with Athabasca Tribal Council and curated and hosted by Cultural Storyteller Geraldine “Ger” Carriere. Guests also experienced powerful storytelling through video and speeches, along with a live auction that energized attendees and drove community support.
This year, the event successfully raised over $54,000 in proceeds, directly supporting Girls Inc.’s ability to deliver free, life-changing programming for girls across the region.
Kicking off the weekend, the Girls Empowerment Mini-Gala brought together 82 girls ages 9–15 from Fort McMurray, Fort McKay, Anzac, and Janvier, for an evening of leadership, creativity, and connection. Participants engaged in hands-on activities, built confidence through shared experiences, and had the opportunity to see themselves reflected in the stories of the Women of Inspiration.
“The Women of Inspiration Celebration is more than an event — it’s a powerful reminder of what’s possible when girls and women are supported to lead, innovate, and create change,” said Katlin Okonkwo, Interim Executive Director of Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta. “From the Mini-Gala to the main event, we saw firsthand how representation, mentorship, and community support can inspire the next generation.”
Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta extends its heartfelt thanks to its partners, donors, volunteers, and attendees whose support made this year’s events a success. Their continued commitment ensures that girls in the Wood Buffalo region have access to safe, empowering spaces where they can learn, grow, and thrive.
