Bright Days & Bold Beginnings: July at Girls Inc.
As the school year wrapped up in June, our focus shifted from classroom sessions to the vibrant energy of summer programming—and what a start it’s been. July marked the beginning of a busy, joy-filled season with camps and workshops that inspire creativity, build confidence, and center each girl’s unique strengths. From STEM experiments and art projects to self-defense training and thoughtful conversations about peer pressure, our team has already reached over 1,300 participants through inclusive, high-impact programming across the region
But the summer isn’t just about learning—it’s also about community. As we gear up for our 31st Annual Golf Tournament Fore Girls Inc., we’re reminded that strong, smart, and bold futures are built with every swing, every step, and every shared moment. Whether you’re signing up to golf, volunteering your time, or cheering us on from afar, your support keeps the momentum going.

July Programming Recap
In-School Programs: On Pause for Summer
Our in-school programming takes a summer break each July, with sessions set to resume in September. While school may be out, our commitment to empowering girls continues through summer camps, workshops, and hands-on learning that keep confidence, creativity, and connection growing strong all season long.
Summer Programming: Confidence in Every Corner
With school out and sunshine in full swing, July marked the launch of our summer programs—bringing bold, hands-on learning to life across Fort McMurray and surrounding communities.
STEM POWER (Ages 6–8):
This two-day science camp welcomed 16 participants eager to explore the world of STEM. Girls dove into hands-on activities like coding, maze-building, bouncy ball chemistry, and slime volcanoes. The fun began with our Summer Code of Conduct and ended with smiles and messy success.
STEM POWER (Ages 10–13):
In partnership with Girls Inc. HQ, this pilot program engaged an average of 19 participants across five days.
Girls tackled engineering challenges, explored sustainability, practiced budgeting at Superstore, and reflected on Indigenous perspectives during a walk through Borealis Park. A perfect blend of fun and future-focused learning.
Economic Literacy (Ages 6-15 in Janvier):
Facilitated by Rhonda in collaboration with Claire from the Nistawoyou Friendship Centre, this three-day workshop welcomed eight participants. The sessions explored the role of Indigenous women in the economy, self-sustainability, and traditional medicine, while integrating the seven sacred teachings.
Future Elders (Ages 6-8):
This two-day program introduced 13 participants to cultural teachings rooted in nature and tradition. The first day focused on learning about local wildlife and the cultural significance of feathers, including an interactive beading activity where participants designed “beaded bears” using clothespins. On the second day, knowledge keeper Claire Antonie shared stories of traditional fish harvesting. Participants observed the descaling and frying process, followed by a creative fish scale art project.
Future Elders (Ages 9-13):
Participants engaged in meaningful conversations about the sacredness of eagle feathers and their use as gifts in Indigenous culture. Claire Antonie joined to share her lived experience of seasonal harvesting with her family. The second day mirrored the younger group’s focus on fish harvesting and art, allowing participants to create their own pieces using fish scales while connecting to ancestral knowledge.
Say It Strong (Ages 9–15)
Based on the Friendly PEERsuasion curriculum, this camp focused on communication, stress management, and resisting peer pressure. Through hands-on activities like toolkit building, skits, and creative projects, participants built stronger friendships and gained confidence in using their voices.
Unstoppable Me (Ages 6–8)
Held at Unifor Hall, this joyful program helped girls explore self-confidence, individuality, and kindness. From decorating t-shirts to crafting Heart-to-Heart Friendship Mailboxes, 14 participants left with new tools for self-love and peer connection.
Power & Protect (Ages 9–15)
This powerful two-day program focused on the importance of words, consent, and self-empowerment. From a reflective art activity to a beginner kickboxing class with Featherlight Defense, participants embraced strength in all forms.
Stay Safe! Course (Ages 9–12)
In partnership with Aurora Training Corp., this full-day course welcomed 18 girls to build essential safety knowledge for time spent away from caregivers—at home, in public, and beyond.
Online Safety (Ages 10–15, Fort McKay)
Held at the Fort McKay Youth Center, this two-day session helped girls understand online luring, grooming, and safe reporting. Participants explored digital safety through group discussion and scenario-based learning.
